Description

For conservation students and professionals, private landowners, or anyone who has an interest in learning how to safely, effectively and legally administer brush pile burns for ecological restoration purposes. This is a FREE 6 hour long workshop that includes an in-class presentation and a field component. This comprehensive workshop was designed by Chicago Wilderness which is a regional conservation alliance that ranges from Illinois, to Indiana, Michigan and Southeastern Wisconsin. Chicago Wilderness partners include Audubon Great Lakes, The Nature Conservancy and more. The workshop has been slightly modified to reflect the burn regulations of the state of Wisconsin. Participants will receive a certificate via mail upon completion of the workshop as well as a digital Brush Pile Burn Boss manual for study and reference.

Morning snacks and water will be provided. Participants should bring a lunch and dress for work outdoors. More details will be provided after participants RSVP

 

Instructor: Sarah Long, NH’s Land Stewardship Manager will be leading this workshop. Ms. Long plans and implements conservation activities that take place at the 93-acre NH Nature Center and at Neighborhood House’s onsite gardens. She manages 2 assistant land stewards and groups of seasonal interns involved in land management projects at the Nature Center. Ms. Long brings 10 years of experience engaging in land management and restoration practices and earned her bachelor’s degree in Conservation and Environmental Science with a minor in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is certified in chainsaw safety and heavy equipment operation. She possesses certifications from Chicago Wilderness Burn Crew Training, is a Chicago Wilderness certified Brush Pile Burn Boss Instructor and holds Wisconsin DATCP issued 3.0 and 6.0 pesticide applicator certifications. Ms. Long has conducted surveys of native and invasive plant species, migratory birds, native amphibians and aquatic invertebrates and led volunteer groups in invasive plant removal projects. Previously she was employed by professional agencies such as the City of Milwaukee Urban Forestry Division and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
