Youth Volunteers Needed!
Playground Movement for the last two years has had a GYSD event in our community and chosen food inequities/hunger/poverty as the area of social issue that we aim to help in our project. The first year (2019) 30 baskets were filled with ingredients for a traditional Easter meal and some other goodies. Last year 40 households received baskets with a generous amount of food.
Date: April 25, 2021
Where: Habitat for Humanity ReStore/Playground
Time: 1p gather to assemble the “baskets” for the households
3p drive through – recipients pick up food
What: Food for 60 households
Who: This year, because of a Sodexo Stop Hunger $500 grant we received through YSA, we must have a minimum 25 youth involved. That doesn't mean that us older folks won't be in the fun of course! Youth 5-11 are also welcome, if accompanied by an adult.
What is Global Youth Service Day?
Date: April 23-25
Qualifications: ages 5-25
“Global Youth Service Day is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world and the only one that celebrates and builds the capacity of all youth ages 5-25 to help our communities and democracy thrive by working together for the common good. On Global Youth Service Day, we call on everyone to engage all young people and adult champions to serve, advocate, join, celebrate, or build capacity.
As President Biden said in his Inaugural Address: ““This is a time of testing. We face an attack on democracy and on truth. A raging virus. Growing inequity. The sting of systemic racism. A climate in crisis. America’s role in the world. Any one of these would be enough to challenge us in profound ways. Now we must step up. All of us. It is a time for boldness, for there is so much to do. And this is certain: we will be judged, you and I, for how we resolve the cascading crises of our era.” Youth can help #CracktheCrises ASAP through Awareness, Service, Advocacy, and Philanthropy projects.
Awareness: Youth are powerful educating others, sharing information and teaching others to positively change
Service: Youth are powerful volunteering, using creativity, time, and talent to directly meet community
Advocacy: Youth are powerful advocating, speaking out and joining others to influence policy makers to change policies and laws, especially when they affect young
Philanthropy: Youth are powerful giving through collecting and donating financial and in-kind”
